In the year 2064, the planet Earth was in disarray. War, climate disaster, and economic collapse threatened to destroy everything. Its primary residents, human beings, sent the first of many envoys into the stars in search of a better home. However, before they reached their destination, the craft encountered system failures and crashed onto the surface of an unknown planet. What the survivors found was shocking: signs of human life, and the realization that they had been asleep for nearly 1,000 years. Still, they were alone on this planet. The other humans had seemingly all but vanished. That was until they found a walled city and, finally, they found the other humans. They were dead, and though the nature of their deaths pointed to cannibalism, none of them showed signs of starvation. Eventually, the second round of humans were able to move on and live out their lives on this new planet. They created new cities and nation-states. Hundreds of years passed, and eventually, they forgot the horrors of their predecessors entirely. Still, not everyone forgot.
